The Ives Quartet shares a bit of history past via a beloved string quartet, then joins with the orchestra for history present: the premiere of Hyo-shin Na’s colorful and expressive exploration of string timbres.

When beginning to write a new piece, I often find my imagination stimulated by things extra-musical: a text, a poem, a painting, a photograph, a sound, a natural object, a time of day, an environment... As I worked on Not the Object Alone between March and November of 2008, I frequently visited a particular English Walnut tree in the Botanical Gardens of Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, noting the branches, leaves, nuts and trunk of the tree as well as the shadows cast by it. Of course, through the changing seasons, varying times of day and states of weather, the shadows (or lack thereof) and the tree itself always surprised me. In Not the Object Alone, the string quartet as a whole and each individual member of the quartet, is like an object - in this case, the tree and its parts (branches, leaves, trunk, etc.), and the orchestra is a sort of musical shadow, relating to the quartet as the tree's shadow does to the tree. In addition, within the orchestra, groups of instruments act as different parts of the shadow (the umbra, or darkest part of the shadow and the penumbra, a "partial" shadow). One can certainly listen to the piece with the tree and its shadows in mind; on the other hand, one might listen allowing the piece to inscribe itself upon the tabula rasa of the consciousness, or one might even hear the music as a sort of object-in-motion (almost like a musical Calder mobile)... Not the Object Alone was commissioned by the San Jose Chamber Orchestra. ....................................................... |

선배님, 음악회 소개해 주셔서 감사합니다. 입장료가 좀 비싸지요? 어제 저도 보고 깜짝 놀랐어요... 오케스트라 콘서트라서 비싼 모양이에요. 너무 비싸서 오시라고 말씀 드릴 엄두가 안 나네요... 혹시라도 오시면 - 공연 후, 리셉션에 참석하셔서 서로 인사 나누게 되기를 바랍니다. *^^*
